Required education

The program you will need to study that is directly related to this career is Automotive Technology, typically all you need to start your career as an auto mechanic is a Highschool diploma, formal training and obviously some on the job training before you can really consider yourself ready to move forward with this part of your life.
“Many automobile mechanics learn their skills through formal training programs. Professional-technical schools and two-year colleges offer these programs. Most auto mechanic programs combine classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Training lasts six months to two years. Some automobile manufacturers and dealers provide training programs at professional-technical or two-year schools. In this type of training program, you study in the classroom and work in the dealer's shop. Every six to eight weeks you rotate between work and study. Some dealers help pay for tuition or the purchase of tools.” - WOIS Chart showing education levels: Less than high school 19%; High school diploma or equivalent 44%; Some college, no degree 22%; Associate degree 11%; Bachelor's degree 3%; Master's degree 0%; Doctoral (Ph.D.) or professional degree 0%
There are plenty of technical schools to choose from you can always find them with a simple search in your state, I haven’t decided myself what technical school to study at but if you have a clue on where you want to go you should research them before making up your mind. It is also highly recommended that you take an apprenticeship program, most people that are interested in this career tend to learn more from hands-on work plus you look way more desirable when your employer sees that you know what you're doing or that there will be minimal training required. Another for of certification that you will most likely need if you plan to work for a major company or one of their dealerships is an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) but this is mostly if you’re planning on becoming a transmission specialist which i would highly recommend you look into.
